zoom stuff

Below is a video on Zoom.  But, the short version of what it isays:
  • We will have a new Zoom link EVERY day for security reasons.  Please check your email nightly for the new Link.
  • We have a Zoom monitor on at all times allowing people to enter the meeting and keeping an eye on things.
  • Please have your child's name as the screen name so our monitors know where to place them in breakout rooms.  Keep the name throughout the day.
  • Private chat in Zoom is to communicate with counselors and staff only.
  • We ask that you don't use virtual backgrounds (too distracting).

Device recommendations

Here's a video from the Geek in the Garden on device recommendations for what to use while 'zooming'.

Here's the TL/DR version.

1 - Try to use a PC or Mac with a webcam as your primary device for zooming.
2 - We've seen some problems with Chromebooks and iPads on Zoom.  If you use one of these, be sure it is a newer one with better specs.
3 - TWO DEVICES.  When working on Zoom with the Garden, you'll use two devices - your primary device for Zoom, and a smartphone to play audio.
4 - Think about getting a bluetooth headset or bluetooth earbuds to use during Zoom to keep outside noises out and allow the most mobility.

Lastly - here's an Amazon list with some BlueTooth earbuds and speakers I recommend.

improving your wifi

Hey All,

Dave Hudson here.  You know me best as our resident playwright, but I also serve as the technical resource for the Actors Garden.  For the next several weeks, I'm going to be your Geek in the Garden and sharing tips and tricks of the technical variety (since we're all venturing into this virtual adventure together).

Below is a video I created talking about ways to improve your wifi, but here's the shortened version of different steps you could take to improve Wifi in your house.
  1. Buy a cable and move your router or modem/router combo to a more central location in your house.
  2. Purchase a wifi repeater/extender that can boost the signal to the dead zones in your house.
  3. Invest in a mesh wifi system that has 3 access points that you plug in around your house and gives you a great signal everywhere.

As I mention in the video, I'm available for phone calls, emails, or facetime, to help you identify and set up things to improve your Wifi.  I'll even make a house call (with a mask, and safely distanced, of course) if you really need some help.

Here's a list of devices on Amazon.

Check Out the video explaining some interesting options.

Here's a great video on mesh systems, which will provide the best wifi experience in your home.
